About SCC^
SCC History^
SCC History Southwest Conservation Corps, a non-profit organization, is a conservation-based program modeled after the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) of the 1930’s. The CCC was created in 1933 as a part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal agencies. Its purpose was to mitigate the suffering and economic down turn caused by the Great Depression. The concept was simple yet effective, provide work and job skills for young unemployed Americans while completing community projects. By the 1940’s more than 300,000 members and alumni had passed through the program.
Developed in 1997, SCC followed in the footsteps of the CCC. Today, SCC has developed into a sustainable organization based out of Durango, Colorado. SCC is accredited by the Colorado Youth Corps Association (CYCA,) and is a member of the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps (NASCC.)
The first program year for SCC, formerly the Southwest Youth Corps, was 1998 when we implemented two Conservation Crews. Since then, SCC has grown steadily each year, diversifying and enhancing programs based on our step ladder model that allows participants to continue to challenge themselves while serving in our organization.
SCC is continually expanding and diversifying opportunities for young adults in four regions of the Southwest:
- SCC-Four Corners based in Durango, CO
- SCC-Sonoran Desert based in Tucson, AZ
- SCC-Los Valles based in Salida, CO
- SCC-Ancestral Lands based in Acoma, NM

A personal issue may be any situation or condition that interferes with your quality of life or your level of coping. Issues may include chemical dependency, emotional difficulties, family, marital, parent-child or other stressful conditions. The EAP also offers a huge array of other free services to you. You can contact the EAP directly at 800-873-7138 or through the website: www.minesandassociates.com/emps_members.htm. Someone will be available to answer your call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Confidentiality is one of the most important aspects of the EAP program. If you contact EAP directly, no one in at SCC will know about it – unless you tell them.

Goal setting and staff member development^
The Goal Setting Process at SCC is intended to guide the support and mentoring relationship between you and your supervisor as well as help you set and manage goals throughout the year. This is a requirement of each employee of the organization. The SCC Goal Worksheet has instructions that hopefully answer most questions. The expectation is that the goal setting meetings take place quarterly.
