Position Title: Corpsmember

Position Type: This crew is both residential and non-residential (see below).

Location: Based out of Durango, CO; works throughout 4-Corners Region

Living Allowance: $300.00 per week.

Benefits: Training, worker’s compensation coverage, travel and food

when on field based projects, $2,362.50 AmeriCorps education award.

Training Provided: S-212 chainsaw training, 130/190 wildland fire-fighting training.

Sustainable Forestry Team (SFT) Overview:

Young men and women 18-25 complete fire fuels reduction, mitigation, noxious tree removal, and forestry projects on public lands throughout the 4-Corners area.  The SFT is run in conjunction with Mountain Alliance of Conservation Corps.  The Alliance consists of Canyon Country Youth Corps, Coconino Rural Environmental Corps, Nevada Conservation Corps, the Wellness Coalition, Rocky Mountain Youth Corps-Taos and the Southwest Conservation Corps..  Projects will include: wild land urban interface thinning; beetle-kill Juniper thinning; Russian Olive and Tamarisk removal; and habitat enhancement thinning projects.  The collaborative nature of the program will find SCC crews working with partner corps programs on projects throughout the four corners.  The SFT crew consists of 6 Corpsmembers that are supervised by 2 Crew Leaders. This crew will have both residential and non-residential schedules.  The crew could camp for up to 12 days at a time in various weather conditions.  While camping, crews are responsible for cooking meals and completing chores.  When on a non-residential schedule members are required to find lodging.  The SFT program requires members to be flexible!!!!

The SFT has a training component that prepares members for careers in the wild land fire management industry and resource management in the public or private sector. Members will receive: S-212 certification (SCC’s chainsaw operation and safety certification); 130/190 certification (wildland firefighter training); if applicable to the crew, they may also receive Colorado State Pesticide and Herbicide Applicator status and Wilderness First Aid/CPR training.  Some members, if they independently arrange for it, can earn college credit for their participation.  For qualifying individuals, an AmeriCorps education award of $2,362.50 will be awarded to members upon successful completion of the program.

General Qualifications:

¨       Corpsmember must be between the ages of 18 – 25.

¨       Corpsmember must be able to secure housing in the Durango area because a minimum of 50% of SFT is non-residential – meaning that corpsmembers will be using the Four Corners office as a base for day projects.

¨       Corpsmember must follow all of Southwest Conservation Corps policies and procedures, including those for safe powersaw operation.

¨       Corpsmember must be willing to work hard, participate as part of a team, and be dedicated to the Southwest Conservation Corps’ mission.

¨       Corpsmember must be a United States Citizen or Permanent Resident.

¨       Corpsmember must be willing to appropriately represent Southwest Conservation Corps and the AmeriCorps Program.

¨       Corpsmembers MUST be willing and able to refrain from the use of alcohol or drugs while                participating in the Sustainable Forestry Team program.

¨       Corpsmember must be physically fit, able to operate a chainsaw for up to 10 hours per day, and be able to lift a minimum 20 pounds.

¨       Corpsmember must make a STRONG commitment to complete the program

¨       40 hours a week and, depending on the project, up to 10 hours a day running a chainsaw.

AmeriCorps Education Awards:

 

In addition to the living allowance, individuals participating in the SFT will be eligible for a $2,362.50 AmeriCorps education award if they successfully complete the program.
