Position Title: Field Supervisor – Four Corners Region

Salary: Field Supervisor: Weekly range $500-580 DOE
Reports To: Program Coordinator – Four Corners Region

Southwest Conservation Corps:
The Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is a non-profit built on the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) that operated from 1933 – 1942. SCC hires young adults ages 14 to 25 to complete conservation work public lands throughout the Four Corners region. While serving with SCC members receive training on job skills, conflict resolution, leadership, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Programs are developed using a step ladder approach to provide a progression of skill development based on a member’s needs. Members receive a weekly stipend, training, and an AmeriCorps Education Award (for qualifying individuals).
The Four Corners office runs different programs with March through October being our peak season during which the Four Corners office runs as many as 6-15 crews at a time throughout its various programs.
Position Description:
The Field Supervisor’s primary role is to provide field support to our field staff and seasonal conservation crews by offering technical assistance, moral support, and ensuring program integrity through policy enforcement and positive mentoring. Field supervisors will also assist with program logistics and staff trainings. The Field Supervisor position is a seasonal position created through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding. On a normal year, the Durango based office runs a minimum of 130 weeks of fee for service work and 24 weeks of Community Corps programs per year, hiring approximately 140 corpsmembers. In 2009, as a result of ARRA funds, SCC employed over 200 individuals between the ages of 14-25. SCC will continue to run beyond normal capacity at all sites in response to additional projects received through funding of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Field Supervisor Responsibilities
- Field Support and Risk Management:
- Check-in with Crew Leaders and Crew Members during field visits.
- Provide guidance and emotional support to crews and crew leaders.
- Enforce all SCC Policies and Procedures.
- Manage on the ground project quality and quantity by providing technical assistance to crews as needed.
- Facilitate corps member development systems and education to crews in the field.
- Mentor field staff and corps members with positive and professional demeanor and behavior.
- Respond to crew emergency situations.
- Participate in a weekly on-call system for crews in the field.
- Participate in staff trainings both as a trainer and/or trainee.
- Staff Development and Training:
- Assist with the interviewing and hiring of crew leaders and crew members as needed.
- Assist with the development and implementation of Crew Leader Trainings.
- Develop and implement technical trainings for crews working on specialized projects.
- Assist with the development and monitoring of risk management policies.
Program Logistics:
- Maintain a clean and efficient operations center (the warehouse and shop).
- Supervise de-rigs and re-supply of tools, equipment and food for all crews with Logistics Coordinator.
- Purchase and repair hand tools, chainsaws and forestry equipment camp equipment, uniforms, and supplies as needed.
- Organize food while maintaining a clean and functional kitchen area.
- Purchase supplies for new programs as they arise.
- Maintain chainsaws and chainsaw parts inventory, perform basic chainsaw maintenance.
- General Administration:
- Work within the established program budget and report purchases to the Program Director.
- Complete regular field site visit reports.
- Meet regularly with Program Coordinator to coordinate logistical and human resources to field needs and follow up.
Qualifications:
- Experience with SCC or other youth conservation corps, professional trail and/or fire crew, or conservation-based program required.
- Insurable driving record and positive outcomes of background check.
- Expert skill level in all or most of the following: trail construction & maintenance, chainsaw operation & maintenance, hand tool maintenance, fencing, running backcountry crews.
- Good organizational, managerial and problem-solving skills;
- Excellent communication and teaching/mentoring skills.
- Strong conflict resolution and team building skills preferred.
- Able to work independently and also to motivate others.
- Current CPR & WFR or WFA certified; has demonstrated good judgment in emergency situations.
- Computer literate (MS Word and Excel proficient).
- Clean driving record (insurable), and current drivers license
- Desire to spend time in the company of youth and young adults; ability to instigate fun!
Essential Functions
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to operate objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to focus. The employee is occasionally required to drive an SCC vehicle. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Work requires some overnight and weekend travel. This job will require a flexible schedule. The successful candidate will be able to take off and go out into the field most anytime, as needed.
