Crew Leader Development Program
Position Type: Full-time, temporary, lasting 7 Months
Location: Based out of Tucson, AZ; Works throughout the Southwestern US
Pay: Living allowance starts at $300 /week ($25 week meal deduction)
Benefits: uniform, food while in the field, training, worker’s compensation coverage, travel to and from work sites, and a $2,675.00 AmeriCorps Education Award.
Position Start Date: January 3 – July 22, 2011
Members must commit to the entire 7- month term of service.
Age: 21 – 25
Program Overview:
The mission of our organization is to empower individuals to positively impact the environment and their own lives through meaningful work and personal growth. Crew Leaders play a vital role in this process. The 7-month long CLDP program trains participants to become SCC field Crew Leaders by providing hands-on leadership experience using a progression model in which participants start out as crew members and end the program as crew leaders.
Schedule:
CLDP members will be 80% residential (living and working outdoors for 11 days at a time) and 20% non-residential (providing their own accommodations in Tucson).
January 3 – February 11, 2011
- Learn leadership, conflict resolution, effective communication, teaching/mentoring, and team building skills while serving as crew members.
- Gain technical skills including trail-building, driving with trailers (including 4×4), rock work, and appropriate tool use and maintenance, chain saw training.
- Participate in the SCC Spring 2011 staff training along with Crew Leaders hired to lead our crews.
February 14 – May 6, 2011
- Serve as roving assistant leaders on three different conservation crews and observe leadership styles in the process.
- Complete conservation projects on public lands, such as trail maintenance, planting, immigrant trash pickup, invasive species removal, and various public recreational facility improvements.
May 16 – July 2011
- Attend the SCC Summer 2011 staff training as full-fledged Crew Leaders.
- Function as crew leaders on SCC conservation crews.
Specialized trainings:
- USDA Forest Service S130 and S190 Wildland FireTraining certification (5 days)
- SCC basic chain saw operation and maintenance certification (5 days)
- Wilderness First Responder certification (8-10 days)
General Qualifications:
Leadership: Experience or a strong desire to lead a diverse group of young adults ages 16 to 25. Ability to manage and participate in the day-to-day details of crew life at work. Ability to listen, willingness to take feedback, and desire to grow continually.
Driving: Members must have a good driving record (insurable), provide a driving record upon application and have a current Driver’s License.
Community Building: Strong interest in helping others grow as individuals while building cohesiveness in a group setting.
Outdoor Stewardship: Members must have a clear track record of genuine enjoyment of the outdoors through camping, backpacking, and leading in the outdoors.
Physical Labor: Experience in manual labor and using a variety of hand tools. Overall good physical conditioning and fitness level to withstand the rigors of the program.
Flexibility: Projects have a degree of uncertainty and will include variable living conditions and last-minute changes. Members must be adaptive, patient and be able to maintain a positive perspective throughout.
Education: Experience or a strong desire to teach, mentor, and implement an environmental education curriculum.
Conservation: Experience or a strong desire to learn the technical skills needed to effectively maintain public lands, and having a flexible definition of what ‘conservation’ means.
AmeriCorps Education Award
Crewmembers that complete the full term of service will receive a (900 hr award amount) AmeriCorps Education Award.
