Four Corners Office

About the Program

The Southwest Conservation Corps-Four Corners office is located in Durango, CO. A 90-minute drive will take you to the Four Corners Monument, where the state lines of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah all meet. The Four Corners office offers a variety of programs for adults and youth and runs a variety of crews in the spring, summer, and fall. Conservation Crews work in many parts of the region, from the arid northern New Mexican deserts to the high-altitude mountains of southwest Colorado.  If you are interested in working with us, please see our job listings. The Four Corners office also collaborates with the Dolores River Restoration Partnership and shares resources with the Western Hardrock Watershed Team.

SCC addresses a variety of the issues in the area directly through our environmental conservation and restoration programs; indirectly, programs benefit participants by empowering them to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment.

About the Area

The Four Corners area is a diverse area geologically, biologically, socially, and economically. Within a two-hour drive from our office in Durango are high-altitude deserts, canyons, and large mountainous wildernesses. Many areas, such as the land around Silverton, CO have been heavily mined and are currently being restored. Water is scarce in the Southwest and an increasing population is draining the available resources, which attracts a lot of political, social, and economic attention even as the area’s population continues to rise. Socially and economically, the area is in part made up of former mining and railroad towns that have turned to tourism for economic vitality in the past few decades. A number of Native American tribes, including the Southern Ute, Ute, Hopi, Zuni, and Navajo nations reside in the region.
