Orientation Day Monday 6/6/11

Today was Orientation with the Southwest Conservation Corps.  There were a lot of people there that I already knew and three new faces.  Our crew leaders came up to all of the new members and welcomed them.  Then we got started.  We found out who each other were and then we played a game called “barnyard” which was really fun.  We got all our papers in order and then we started work.  We walked over to the county shop and cleaned up our vans.  We took the vans over to the Road and Bridge Department and had lunch, loaded up again, and went to the Saguache Museum where we worked for the rest of the day.  We had an afternoon break and then went back to work.  After we finished our project, we went back to the Road and Bridge Department, did some end of the day thing, and were dismissed.  The day was tiring but fun!

Our First Week of Work

During the first week at SCC we have been working at the Saguache Museum.  We had one big project to do and a bunch of little ones.  We learned how to work as a team and get things done in a safe and timely manner.  We learned how to use new tools properly.  We also had to learn to be patient because we got through some jobs quickly and had to do some small stuff like clean windows while the project sponsors found bigger projects.  I think the most important thing that happened during this week was getting to know everyone and work with them.

Our Trip to Crestone

This first week I had to write a blog about Friday.  I learned a new word: Shumei.  Shumei means art, relax, and agriculture.  I also learned that you can get relaxed with your spirit by worshipping at the shrine.  We also visited an old mine located near the shrine.  We all had a wonderful day together.
