Position Title: Interim Recruitment Coordinator

Position Type: Seasonal, full-time, exempt, Immediately-October 28, 2011

Location: Office in Durango, CO

Salary: Field Supervisor: Weekly range $500-580 DOE

Benefits: Per SCC temporary staff policies (PTO and Insurance stipend)

Reports To: Program Director in Durango, CO

Southwest Conservation Corps:

The Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is a local, non-profit, AmeriCorps-affiliated organization based in Durango, Colorado. SCC engages local young adults, aged 12-30, to complete conservation work projects on public lands throughout the Four Corners Region. SCC has a strong environmental education component, and life skills are learned via formal lessons, on-the-job training, and the process of communal living.  SCC serves a diverse population representative of the local communities it works in, including at-risk youth and a cross-section of ethnicities and income levels.

 

Position Description:

The Interim Recruitment Coordinator’s (IRC) primary responsibility is to recruit, hire and place conservation corps members (ages 18 – 30).  In addition, the IRC will also administer hire and AmeriCorps paperwork as well as reporting on outcomes for grants. The Durango-based program runs a minimum of ­­168 weeks of conservation work employing anywhere from 100 to 200 young adults per year. The Recruitment Coordinator position is approximately 20% field based and 80% office based.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Hiring Corps Members:
    • Interviews and hires about 120-200 Corpsmembers (CMs) per year.
    • Oversees all Corpsmember hiring paperwork and paper files.
    • Maintains/updates SCC crew rosters of all hired Corpsmember applicants.
    • Processes and files all Corps Member hiring and program paperwork.
    • Creates job descriptions and applications for all Corpsmember positions.

 

  • Recruiting Corps Members:
    • Develops and posts advertisements for newspapers, newsletters, and the internet.
    • Completes targeted recruiting efforts and visits as needed.

 

  • Administrative Duties:
    • Administers, tracks, and files all hire and Corpsmember file paperwork.
    • Monitors and files Corpsmember evaluations and Corpsmember Competencies.
    • Manages recruitment portion of SCC database.
    • Enrolls, tracks, and Exits AmeriCorps participants.

 

  • Field Support:
    • Implement, monitor, and enforce all SCC Policies and Procedures.
    • Complete regular field site visit reports.
    • Participate in a once a month on-call system for crews in the field. Assists in the development and implementation of crew leader training as well as specific crew trainings.
    • Mentors Corpsmembers through check-ins and visits to the field.

 

Timeline of Duties:

May-Aug (summer):Recruiting/hiring for summer/fall crews; & AmeriCorps admissions/exits for summer participants; crew visits, field support, crew trainings, and program support; CM replacement as needed

Sep-Oct  (fall): AmeriCorps admissions/exits for fall participants; crew visits, field support, and crew trainings, and program support; CM replacement as needed

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience with SCC, other youth conservation corps, or youth development program required.
  • Experience in all or most of the following: trail construction & maintenance, chainsaw operation & maintenance, hand tool maintenance, fencing, running backcountry crews.
  • Good organizational, managerial and problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent communication and teaching/mentoring skills.
  • Strong conflict resolution and team building skills preferred.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a fast-paced team environment.
  • Current CPR & WFA certification.
  • Computer literate (MS Word and Excel proficient).
  • Clean driving record (insurable), and current driver’s license.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Positive attitude and ability to have fun with young adults.

 

Essential Functions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to operate objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to focus. The employee is occasionally required to drive an SCC vehicle. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Work requires some overnight and weekend travel. This job will require a flexible schedule.  The successful candidate will be able to take off and go out into the field most anytime, as needed.
