Crew # 134
So far Hitch 1 has been an incredible experience! We are in Blythe, CA camping in a remote area 30 mins from our work site. Thus far, the weather has been sunny and HOT. Last night we survived a wild dust storm. Winds up to 40mph were thrashing our tent and came close to tearing it down. I couldn’t help but feel I was in Iraq, in the middle of the desert, when I woke up and saw Danielle covered in sand. Our work here has been a new experience for everyone. The work site is also incredibly gorgeous! I’ve been seeing new birds every day.
Crew #LOS HOBOS!
Monday
Hello! Today was a great day full of fun hobo activities. We accomplished a lot, which is a nice change of pace from last week. The team led by Chase got out the pesky pole from Saturday that didn’t want to leave the ground. HOORAY!!! Kristen, Jared, Meg and I saw 2 coyotes chasing each other (they are super-fast and pretty. Phil was comical as usual, Emily informed me that JR busted pretty hard today landing flat on his face, which I find funny (only cuz’ he’s not injured). Upon arriving back to camp Meg, Emily and I went on a scavenger hunt for wood and found many more treasures than just wood near an old abandoned-broken down trailer -> a sweet cane with a duck head and lots of crazy things. Unfortunately no time for ultimate Frisbee BOOOO!!! Oh well, time for chili mac!
Until Next Time, DV
Ps. Jake just broke the bolt on top of the pressure coke and it shot bean juice/beans up like a carzy volcano! Thus all the brown on this paper! Very funny!!!!
Jared Crew #134 “Los Hobos”
Wednesday January 26th, 2011
Today is the last full work day of Los Hobos’ first hitch, which from this member’s perspective all but disappeared before I was completely aware it had begun. As far as our day’s toils, we were employed in the same manner as every other day this week-pulling Hobos, placing Hobos, constructing PARS- all that fun jazzy stuff. However, these tasks were made more logistically challenging due to lack of bulls eye level #2. This challenge was mitigated by means of the letter game. Kristen won the tri-award of most difficult, most obvious, and most annoying choosing Joe-Kahl-Joe from last week!! Well played mad’am. Phil joined us for our gigantic “Br-inner” deliciously prepared by Danielle and Emily. MMMM!!
Again speaking only for this corpsmember’s perspective, it is difficult to believe this is the end our first hitch together based on the crew’s interpersonal close-knittedness (made up word) it already feels like being part of a quirky, eccentric, multi-faceted family.
Here’s to the nights we feel alive!
Crew # “Los Hobos”
A rough ride through the desert with old country music as the soundtrack. A fine rec day indeed. Searching for the far off chocolate mountains, a sign warning of intruders of gun shots momentarily deterred us, be we were soon on our way, rambling the high desert of the southern Colorado River. The wind was high, not quite as high as our spirits! <- lame. They were even higher when we headed to Steaks and Cakes where the sweetest old lady west of the Mississippi waited on us. Breaking out our IDs we got to look into eachother’s past. Jared looked like a serial killer and myself pinned as a terrorist. After a jaunt to reload at the local supermarket, Jake smelled roses as a local threw up in the stall next to him <- the highlight of his day.
Team sports was next on the list: Ultimate Frisbee. A surprising amount of gifted athletes on the squad. I thouroughly enjoyed getting laid out by Chase who was having flashbacks to his linebacker days. Jared’s size and speed are unmatched. Emily is impossible to cover. Danielle is a born athlete and motivator. Three cheers all around for Los Hobos! A swim in the Colorado cooled off the jets. The the fire warmed us up before bed. VIVA LOS HOBOS!

THINGS THAT I LEARNED TODAY:
- THER ARE 23 HOBO’S IN THE PVR 2/3 AREA, NOT 22
- CANADIAN GEESE IN CHESAPEAKE BAY MIGRATE TO BLYTHE, CA FOR THE WINTER, AS DO A LOT OF RETIREE’S IN RV’S
- LOS LOBOS CAN INSTALL A PVR IN UNDER 30 MINUTES
- APPARENTLY, FOLDING YOUR PANTS UP AND ROLLING YOUR SOCKS DOWN OVER YOUR SHOES IS STYLISH
- I WILL GENUINIELY MISS JOE’S BANTAR
- CIBOLA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE ENCOMPASSES 17,267 ACRES OF LAND
- RUNNING IS A MOOD ENHANCER
- EATING A CONSISTENT DIET OF BEANS DOES NOT FARE WELL FOR A SOCIAL LIFE, UNLESS EVERYONE AROUND YOU HAS THE SAME DIET.
- WHEN LEFT UNATTENDED LOS HOBOS WILL DEFAULT TO PLAYING NINJA IN APPROCIMATELY 3 MINUTES (TIMED)
- I LOVE EACH AND EVERYONE ON MY CREW
Crew #134 Chase
Today, today. The ‘Crew” had a good ol’ first day. Phil and Joe and all of the pesky HO-BOs, and the birds and the bees, the flowers and the trees, we trekked and traversed and once again it was our “first”, and the whole crew excluding Jake ran the hill. But I am sure Jake had fun stirring Tacos in his Chaco’s. Front country living is a thrill, and I am sure back country will be comparable, dig it! DIG IT!
Run, Run, Run, run, take a poop or two, that’s what we do!
Crew # LOS HOBOS
Twas the 8th night of Hitch
Every tent was well pitched
As the slow colorful desert sun set
Games were played and smart goals were met
Los hobos were gathered tight round the fire
After a day of hard work they are beginning to tire
All the hobos were pulled in CVCA three
As we took them apart there was ore than one bee
We all work hard…and then there was phill
But we all know without him our job would lack thrill
Frisbee and ultimate, hobos and sun
The day was quite full but we fit in a run.
A spicey hot dinner and farting al night
Gathering close to read by fire light
The day was full of fun, laughter and trees
And now all I was is to go to bed please.
Good night,
<3 Emily
(we also did the human knot)
