Southwest Conservation Corps received a national award from The Corps Network for Service Project of the Year at an awards ceremony on Capitol Hill February 16th, 2011.
The project, the Tribal Preservation Program, was developed in the spring of 2010 by Cornell Torivio, the SCC Ancestral Lands Program Development Coordinator in Acoma, New Mexico. Cornell trained Native American youth in preservation techniques on historic and prehistoric sites and with grant funding from NPS, sent a crew to work with the Petrified Forest National Park to complete stabilization of the historic depot tank stage station.
NPS staff at both the park level and national NPS Vanishing Treasures office were thrilled at the quality of work and look forward to a continued collaboration with SCC.
