Celebrating Martin Luther King Day with Community – January 17, 2011

A large influx of ambitious Peace Corps Fellows from the University of Arizona descended upon El Rio Acres and Gin Family Gardens to volunteer with tree planting and general clean-up for Martin Luther King Day.
Eight holes, 4 feet deep and approximately 4 feet in diameter were quickly dug by these hard-working volunteers to accommodate citrus trees, plum, peach and apple! In a short amount of time our orchard was planted!
Meanwhile the remaining volunteers spent time removing cleaning from the garden plot and throughout the neighborhood. Litter was picked up along Riverview Blvd, Yavapai Street and El Rio Drive to fill over 70 bags!!!
The number of enthusiastic volunteers was refreshing for the Sonoran Desert Staff. These folks were no strangers to service and they brought their professional experience into this volunteer event. Those with Landscape Architecture experience helped with planting trees and we were also able to make connections with an art education graduate student for our garden mural that will be going up on the storage rail car. Over all these Peace Corps Volunteers exceeded our expectations and we are very fortunate to have service oriented individuals involved in our garden project.
