Launching MISSION SERVE

Posted by SCC on Tuesday, November 17th, 2009.

SCC was honored to partner with ServiceNation in an event that launched MISSION SERVE: Forging a Continuum of Service. On Veterans Day, November 11th, 2009, Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden, and Alma J. Powell joined together to initiate a new form of service to America. MISSION SERVE partners with more than 50 civilian and military service organizations in 36 programs in order to help grow the service movement in America and to strengthen our nation as a whole.
SCC was honored to have Jason Lawrence, Veterans Green Jobs Coordinator, speak in Washington, D.C. on behalf of SCC and VGJ. Lawrence highlighted the national benefits of utilizing well trained veterans to work for a new mission of environmental service and the personal transformation that many crewmembers went through after working in the back country. “Our country faces unparalleled environmental and energy challenges that threaten our security and sustainability. At the same time, 1.8 million veterans are returning home as a highly trained and disciplined workforce in need of meaningful work that embodies the ethic of service that brought them into the military,” stated Lawrence.
On November 11, 2009, the powerful message was sent out that the service of civilians and military members can be the new problem-solving strategy in America. “Despite the tremendous outpouring of support for our troops, significant gaps remain as these brave young men and women return from the battlefield,” said Col. Robert L. Gordon, III, chair of MISSION SERVE and Senior Vice President for Civic Leadership for City Year. “Mission Serve is evidence of the innovation of America’s service organizations to fill those gaps and address in unison the challenges faced by our veterans, active-duty and reserve service members, and their families.”
