Starting a New Session in the Sonoran Desert

Posted by SCC on Monday, January 26th, 2009.

To be in the serenity of nature, to work and strengthen my body, to learn and grow from various people and to get paid for it, all holds quite an appeal. In a society where so much is self-focused and nihilistic it is freeing to be apart of a team where the conservation and ecological responsibility of our beautiful earth are both learned and lived. I am encouraged greatly to be a part of an organization and a family who is proactive in conservation and who inspires many, like me, to do the same.

This is my first time serving with SCC and my first few weeks have been quite an introduction. My team, which has quickly become a family, has been working in the Black Canyon desert laying down new trail. The work is intensive and at times mentally straining, yet the time spent working and living outdoors with my crew family is one of the greatest blessings in my life so far. My days begin usually under a torrent of stars and drowsy eyes but each morning no matter how tired I might be I feel so alive, so full of awe for what we do and where I am.

From my crew family I have learned so very much, which is bound to happen when people from Oregon, Michigan, Virginia, Vermont and other places, who have quite different passions, ambitions, and perspectives begin to live and work with one another for twelve days at a time. One of the most amazing aspects of my family here is that we range from 18 years old to 20 years old, so very young, but each so entirely able to add amazing colors and patterns to the tapestry that is life. I have come to love them dearly.

The road can be challenging, and usually is, but worth every step. I know these next few weeks will be over far too soon, but I will never forget them. Hopefully I will be led back to serve again with SCC. I don’t think I’ll be able to stay away for too long. There are few better ways to live one’s life than to do it with an organization like SCC. I am blessed.

We’ve dome so many great hikes all over the country but I’ll never walk another trail without a new appreciation for how it got there. Thanks for all you guys are doing. Keep up the great spirit!
