Crew 94 'Digs' the Job and the Southwest!

Posted by SCC on Monday, November 17th, 2008.

My name is Rob and I work on Crew 94. We haven’t thought of a nickname for our crew yet, but I think “Crew 94” sounds pretty good. I suppose we could call ourselves “Ladder 94” and pretend we’re firefighters. But that wouldn’t make any sense.

We’ve seen and done a lot of neat stuff doing this job. We started off in the Great Sand Dunes National Park; where, everyday we hiked up this ridiculously beautiful alpine valley to build steps on a trail by basically putting rocks into the side of a mountain. I guess it was a bit more complicated than that, but that was basically what we did. It was really cool! (If you have any more specific questions about the types of work we did in the Great Sand Dunes, feel free to ask SCC’s Sonoran Desert Recruitment Coordinator Lindsey Ripley. Her email is on this site somewhere and there’s nothing she loves more than answering questions from complete strangers! That’s not even a joke.)

Also there were the Sand Dunes themselves, which are super fun to roll down. Then we went to Tonto National Monument where we saw some ancient cliff dwellings and learned about the people who built them. Now we’re at Sonoran Desert National Monument where we are picking up trash. Yep. But it’s still a pretty sweet deal in my opinion, because I get to hang out with some really cool folks: the members of Crew 94. Here are some things they said that they like about this job, in no particular order:

  • Not working in an office!
  • Getting a FREE ride to the wilderness.
  • Seeing everything from desert floors to mountain peaks.
  • Being vegetarian for two weeks at a time (which is totally untrue because we have sausage!)
  • Getting away from hectic city life.
