Last hitch in Canyonlands National Park

Posted by SCC on Friday, October 17th, 2008.

The last hitch in Canyonlands … after six weeks of working here we’ve managed to accomplish 12 miles (63,360 ft.) of cleared corridor, 175 ft. trail rebenched, 10 rock steps chisled out of sandstone, 6 check steps constructed, 3 log bridges constructed (10’ X 3’), 40 ft. new tread, 2 retaining walls (22ft. X 24.5ft. and 2ft X 8ft.), 27 cubic ft. of crush fill, 18 ft. erosion control, 13 water bars installed, 7 grade dips maintained or installed,  1 rock drain maintained, and 20 ft. of armored trail constructed.

We’ll look back fondly on the work, the beautiful scenery, and “Papa Bear” (John Washburn, Crew Leader) frowning at us and saying, from behind his beard, “No laughing.  No fun.”  We’ll miss swimming in the Green River, exploring ruins, and hanging out with each other.
